Experimentation Monday!

Experimentation Monday!

On Friday I received some samples of Toasted Hemp Seeds, Raw Hemp Hearts, and Hemp Protein Powder from fellow food producer John and his business Minnesota Hemp Farms and their product, Field Theory. I’m not that familiar with Hemp, other than I’ve seen it in lotions and other foods, but had never personally eaten any. It was surprisingly good. I really like the slight nutty flavor of the roasted seeds. I needed to know more about this little seed.

Turns out this little seed is being called a “super food.” Why, you ask? According to data, Hemp is unique because the seeds contain nearly perfect balance of omega 3 to omega 6, plus iron, vitamin E, and all of the essential amino acids our bodies need. Hemp seeds are said to be the most nutritionally complete food source in the world. In addition, there is no known allergen to Hemp Seeds, so it’s safe for people with nut and seed allergies.

But won’t eating Hemp products get me high? Well, if you live in Colorado or the other limited states where recreational marijuana is legal, then maybe. However, the Hemp Seeds/Hearts grown commercially for industrial use in Minnesota are safe and won’t make you high. (I know, some of you are thinking, well that’s a bummer!)

So this morning I experimented with some Sugar Free Hemp Brittle – 4 kinds, in fact. I’ll let staff taste test tomorrow and  then I’ll see if it needs more tweaking or if one of them is a winner as it is. I used the raw hearts, roasted seeds, a combo of the two, and one with cocoa nibs. Smells great in the kitchen, so I’m going to guess they taste yummy!

Follow us on social media to see if this makes it into our low carb/keto friendly candy catalog! There are a few other ideas floating around this little head of mine, too. I love the idea of good fats and protein found in these seeds.
